Research Interests:
C4 photosynthesis evolved from the ancestral C3 photosynthetic pathway. C4 plants outcompete C3
species in hot, dry and/or high light environments, and while anatomical, genetic and biochemical changes
were required for C4 evolution, details of the changes are largely unknown. Comparisons of closely related
C3, C4 and C3-C4 species at the molecular level has allowed us to identify changes responsible for the
evolution of several C4 proteins.

Research Experiences:
I completed my PhD at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. I then moved to Australia for postdoctoral
work, first at The University of Melbourne, then as an Australian Research Council Post-doctoral Research
Fellow at The Queensland University of Technology and finally at The Australian National University (ANU).
I was a lecturer at ANU and Macquarie University, before moving to The University of Western Australia in
2003.
